Election Commission opposed the screening of “PM Narendra Modi”, a biopic made on the life of Prime Minister Narendra Modi citing a “tilt in the electoral balance” during the Lok Sabha poll campaign. The Election Commission claimed that the biopic on PM Narendra Modi is a “hagiography” that treats the subject with undue reverence and release of the movie will render a change in the electoral polls in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

Earlier the Supreme Court has sought EC”s response on the PM Modi biopic and directed them to see the film and submit the response. On April 15, SC told Election Commission to re-examine the film and make an informed decision on the release of the film.

After watching the film, Election commission submitted a 20-page report to the Supreme Court bench headed by the chief justice Ranjan Gogoi on the biopic ” PM Narendra Modi”. the Election Commission in its response said that the biopic “produces a political environment where an individual acquired a cult status”. The poll body claimed that the release of the film while the Model Code of conduct is in effect will lead to the favor of a particular political party.

The Election Commission said that movie was “unabashedly uni-dimensional” and more of a “hagiography” than a “biography” that treats the subject as saints and gives undue reverence. The Election Commission said that the movie puts Narendra Modi on the higher pedestal through the use of specific slogans, scenes, and symbols.

“The move has several scenes depicting the major opposition party (Congress) as corrupt and showing them in poor light. The leaders of the opposition are depicted in a manner that their identification will be clear and obvious to the viewers.

The Election Commission also put forward the ending statement of the biopic that quotes “India is Modi and Modi is India.” The Election commission has asked the Supreme Court to stop the release of the biopic till May 19, during the commencement of the Lok Sabha elections as it will hinder the poll balance.

The opposition parties have sought supreme courts direction previously to ban the release of the biopic as it will result in influence the masses and might change the results of the elections by influencing the poll balance on the emotional results of the biopic.
