In a quick turn of events on Sunday, Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti and Sajad Lone – the three prominent faces of Jammu and Kashmir politics were put under house arrest late on Sunday. In the meantime, authorities have also issued an order banning Mobile internet and landline phone connections in the valley. While public meetings or rallies have been banned in the State.
The development comes on the backdrop after the authorities last week issued an advisory for the Amarnath Yatra pilgrims asking them to cut down their stay in the state.
While National Conference leader Abdullah had expressed apprehension that he was going to be placed under house arrest along with other mainstream leaders of the State.
‘I believe I’m being placed under house arrest from midnight tonight & the process has already started for other mainstream leaders. No way of knowing if this is true but if it is then I’ll see all of you on the other side of whatever is in store. Allah save us’, Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said in a series of tweet.
In another tweet, he added, ‘I’m especially concerned about the people living in the Pir Panchal & Chenab Valley regions. These areas have been very susceptible to attempts at communal violence. I hope the Govt has taken adequate precautions to ensure no communal trouble breaks out’.

While PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti also reacted to the development saying, ‘How ironic that elected representatives like us who fought for peace are under house arrest. The world watches as people & their voices are being muzzled in J&K. The same Kashmir that chose a secular democratic India is facing oppression of unimaginable magnitude. Wake up India’.

In another tweet, she said, ‘Hope those who accused us of rumor-mongering realize that our fears weren’t misplaced. Leaders under house arrest, broadband services suspended & section 144 enforced isn’t normal by any standard’.
