A major setback rocked the Congress in the North-eastern region when Tripura Congress President Kirit Pradyot Deb Barman resigned from his post. The leader not only resigned from his office of President but also gave up his party’s membership.

The leader has been disappointed by the party’s functioning and increasing intra-party politics. He also accused the Congress party of accommodating corrupt and criminal people within the organization.

Kirit Pradyot Deb Barman is the son of Kirit Bikram Kishore Deb Barman, who happens to be the last king of Tripura. He has been at the loggerhead with the party since he appealed in the Supreme Court for an “NRC-like list” in Tripura. He said that he was pressurized by the party chiefs to withdraw his petition.

It was also reported that Kirit was having strained relations with the party’s general secretary and northeast in-charge Luizinho Faleiro.

TIW’s Take-

After the debacle of Congress party in Lok Sabha elections of 2019, many of its party leaders have resigned. The party is already struggling to hold its ground in the rising stature of BJP power. And now the series of resignations just before the upcoming polls is set to increase the trouble for Congress.

Mumbai Congress chief Milind Deora had also quit the post after former Chief Rahul Gandhi announced to step down taking the moral responsibility of the party’s loss.

Last week, former Jharkhand Congress chief Ajoy Kumar also quit the party and joined Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
