Sonia Gandhi, former Congress President, and UPA Chairperson, on Saturday, was elected as Leader of Congress Parliamentary Party in the meeting of all 52 MPs held in the national Capital. All 52 MPs and other Top leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, Ghulam Nabi Azad, among others were present in the meeting held at the Central Hall of Parliament.

This will be Sonia Gandhi’s fourth consecutive term as a Leader of Congress Parliamentary Party.

Congress Communication In-Charge Randeep Surjewala tweeted, Smt. Sonia Gandhi elected as the leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party!

‘We thank the 12.13 Crore voters for reposing faith in the Congress Party’, said Sonia Gandhi in the meeting quoted Randeep Surjewala in a tweet.

Sonia Gandhi, UPA Chairperson, was the only Congress MP from the largest State, Uttar Pradesh. She unlike her son managed to retain Congress bastion Rae Bareli and defeated Dinesh Pratap Singh of BJP with over 1.67 Lakh votes.

All the elected MPs also discussed the party’s strategy for the upcoming Lok Sabha Session that is slated to begin from June 17th. This was the first Official meeting of Congress where Rahul Gandhi was also present.

Speaking in the meeting, now an MP from Wayanad Rahul Gandhi thanked the voters and Congress workers. He said as quoted by Surjewala, ‘Every Congress member must remember that each one of you is fighting for the Constitution, for every person in India irrespective of the color of his skin or belief’.

Earlier to this Rahul Gandhi attended a CWC meet on May 25 where he taking moral responsibility of the defeat had offered to step down from his post. Reportedly despite the CWC rejected his resignation, now an MP from Wayanad Rahul Gandhi is said to be unfazed.

Many Leaders have met Gandhi and tried to convince him to continue leading the party.

The Congress faced a crushing defeat in national polls and won 52 seats, which is only 8 more than it got in 2014 national polls. It has also lost some of its strongholds across the country including Rahul Gandhi’s Amethi in Uttar Pradesh and Jyotiraditya Scindia‘s Guna in Madhya Pradesh.
