Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi and Congress parliamentary party (CPP) leader Sonia Gandhi on Monday held a meeting with all its new MPs of the party in the national capital. Speaking in the meeting, Sonia Gandhi assured all the new MPs of all the support from the grand old party.

The meeting of the new MPs was called as part of the training cum orientation program and was held at the party’s war room at 15 Gurdwara Raqabganj Road.

Sources familiar with the development of the meeting claimed that Sonia Gandhi stressed to hold such meetings regularly. Among others who attended the meeting include party Chief Whip K Suresh, Rajeev Gowda and Jairam Ramesh. All three also addresses the new MPs. However, Rahul Gandhi did not address the MPs.

The meeting comes on the backdrop when Congress is in deep crisis after Rahul Gandhi made his resignation as party president public last week.

Rahul Gandhi officially resigned from the party Top Post last week saying as president of the Congress party he is responsible for the loss of the 2019 elections. He added that accountability is critical for the future growth of our party. It is for this reason that I have resigned as Congress president.

In the National polls that concluded on May 23, the Congress put a flop show and won 52 seats, which is only 8 more than it got in 2014 national polls. It has also lost some of its strongholds across the country including Rahul Gandhi’s Amethi in Uttar Pradesh and Jyotiraditya Scindia‘s Guna in Madhya Pradesh.

Rahul Gandhi, soon after the poll outcome, had on May 25 offered to step down from his post at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting.
