Asserting that her party will contest the by-polls on its own in Uttar Pradesh, BSP Supremo Mayawati on Tuesday said this should be seen as a permanent break-away of the BSP-SP Alliance. Mayawati reportedly said that the party believes that the coalition with Samajwadi Party did not work for it in the recently held polls.

Mayawati, as quoted by ANI, said, ‘It’s not a permanent break. If we feel in future that SP Chief succeeds in his political work, we’ll again work together. But if he doesn’t succeed, it’ll be good for us to work separately. So we’ve decided to fight the by-elections alone’.

Mayawati’s statement came hours after she reportedly told party workers to prepare for by-elections on its own. By-polls are slated for at least 11 assembly seats in the state. The by-polls in these 11 seats necessitated after MLAs – 9 from BJP and one each from SP-BSP – resigned to contest the Lok Sabha Polls.

Addressing a presser, Mayawati, however, praised Akhilesh Yadav and his wife Dimple Yadav. She reportedly said, ‘Ever since SP-BSP coalition took place, SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav & his wife Dimple Yadav have given me a lot of respect. I also forgot all our differences in the interest of the nation, & gave them respect. Our relation isn’t only for politics, it’ll continue forever’.

Reportedly, in a party meeting on Monday, BSP Supremo asked all MLAs and Ministers not to depend on Coalition to seek votes.

Responding on the Mayawati’s announcement, Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav that SP will contest by-polls on its own if BSP has snapped ties.  Yadav said, ‘If the coalition has broken, I will reflect deeply on it & if the coalition isn’t there in the by-elections, then Samajwadi Party will prepare for the elections. SP will also fight on all 11 seats alone’.

Earlier on Monday, Samajwadi Party Leader and Former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Monday said that his party will continue to fight for social justice along with Bahujan Samajwadi Party.

He made the comment while addressing a public gathering at his Lok Sabha constituency Azamgarh.

It should be noted that BSP-SP Alliance faced a crushing defeat in the state in the recently held national polls. In Uttar Pradesh, BJP bagged 62 seats and with its ally Apna Dal (Sonelal) it took its tally to 64 seats out of the 80 Lok Sabha Seat. While Mahagathbandhan bagged 15 seats – BSP 10 and SP 5 – while Congress only managed to retain its bastion Rae Bareli.
