The Indian National Congress on Tuesday appointed transgender activist Apsara Reddy as a general secretary of its women’s wing, making her the 134-year-old party’s first transgender office-bearer at the national level. Congress celebrates Foundation day, party turns 134 years old
Congress National President Rahul Gandhi in the presence of Lok Sabha MP and All India Mahila Congress Chief Sushmita Dev on Tuesday appointed Reddy, a well known transgender Journalist and Activist as a general secretary of its Women’s Wing, All India Mahila Congress(AIMC).

AIMC official handle later quoted the tweeted and welcomed the newly appointed general secretary.

The newly-appointed general secretary, Reddy, said: “I will meet with a cross-section of women to address issues pertaining to their rights.”
Reddy had been associated with BJP and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in the past. Apsara Reddy had joined the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam or AIADMK party in May 2016.
She had moved to the pro-Sasikala camp of the AIADMK after party icon Jayalalithaa‘s death later that year.
