The DMK on Tuesday announced that it would contest on 20 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu in the coming General Elections 2019. MK Stalin led party has made the announcement after finalizing alliance terms with all its allies for which it held rounds of discussions.

MK Stalin while addressing the press said, ‘We have allocated 10 seats to our alliance partner Congress and other 10 have been given to our other alliance partners. DMK will contest on the remaining 20 seats. On 7th March, we will begin the identification of the seats for both DMK & alliance partners’ he added.

The DMK’s announcement also means that Vijayakanth’s DMDK entry into Mega Alliance is unlikely, DMDK is yet to pact any alliance with any party. However, it seems like the ruling AIADMK that has also have BJP is positive about aligning with the actor turned politician’s party. The DMK had earlier tried to reach and wooed the DMDK for an alliance.

DMK president M K Stalin said his party has concluded the seat-sharing agreement with all of its allies and that the process of identifying the constituencies to allot to them would start from Thursday, March 7.

The DMK will lead a Mega Opposition coalition in the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry comprising of the Congress, CPI(M), CPI, MDMK, VCK, IUML, KMDK and IJK.

The Congress has been allotted a big portion of seats among the DMK’s allies, with the Rahul Gandhi led party receiving nine seats in the state, and a single seat of Puducherry.

The DMK has allotted one seat each to the MDMK, IJK, IUML and the KMDK. It has also allotted the MDMK one Rajya Sabha seat, the election for which is scheduled for June.

All the ally parties have also expressed their support to the DMK for the by-polls to 21 Assembly seats in the state, which have been lying vacant for some time now.

MK Stalin’s announcement came hours after it finalized the seat arrangement with its eight ally CPI(M) early in the day. Informing about the poll pact, CPI(M) Leader K Balakrishna said, ‘In the upcoming Parliament Elections, to defeat BJP-AIADMK-PMK alliance in Tamil Nadu, CPI-M has made an agreement with DMK. We have allied on 2 parliamentary constituencies out of 40 constituencies in Tamil Nadu & Pondicherry’.

While the Ruling party in Tamil Nadu AIADMK had stitched alliance with Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP). The BJP will contest five seats in alliance with the AIADMK, PMK and the Puthiya Neethi Katchi and also likey to take DMKDK into the Alliance.

As per the Alliance, BJP will back the ruling AIADMK in the 21 Assembly Seat by-polls. The alliance is for all the 39 seats in Tamil Nadu and one in Puducherry.

Tamil Nadu has total 39 Lok Sabha Seats while Puducherry has a single Lok Sabha seat. General Elections 2019 are due for April-May however official schedules for polls are yet to be released.
