Increasing stature of the saffron party in Haryana, the state assembly elected Gian Chand Gupta ( Bharatiya Janata Party MLA ) as its speaker on Monday. The leader was unanimously elected by the assembly.

It has been reported that the Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had proposed the name of Gian Chand Gupta. His name was also supported by Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala.

Gian Chand Gupta had defeated Congress candidate Chander Mohan Bishnoi in the recently held polls. He represents Panchkula constituency from the state. The leader had also held the position of the chief whip of his BJP party in the previous Assembly.

Before the appointment of Gian Chand, the state had Raghubir Singh Kadian as its pro-term speaker. He was the one who administered the oath to Manohar Lal Khattar, Dushyant and other legislators.

Previously, the grand old party had appointed the former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda as the leader of Congress Legislature Party in the state along with selecting him for the position of Leader of Opposition.
