The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday formed a ‘grand alliance’ in the Northeast with an aim to defeat the Congress in the region.

AGP(Axom Gana Parishad), BPF(Bodoland People’s Front) are the major part of the alliance.

Himanta Biswa Sharma of BJP, Keshav Mahanta and Atul Bora of the AGP were also present with BJP Secretary Ram Madhav while announcing the development.

Hectic schedule of discussions between the Bharatiya Janata Party and many of its allies in the Northeast, on Tuesday, have resulted in the formation of a ‘grand alliance’ with a motive  to defeat the Congress.

BJP National General Secretary Ram Madhav claimed in a post on Wednesday that the alliance has the potential to win at least 22 of the 25 Lok Sabha seats from the Northeast.

Previously, The Axom Gana Parishad(AGP), in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, left the NEDA(North East Democratic Alliance).

However, on Tuesday night, Axom Gana Parishad (AGP) forged a pre-poll alliance with the ruling BJP.

BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav also held meetings in Dimapur(Nagaland) and Guwahati with chief ministers of BJP-led governments in Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and the heads of coalition governments in Nagaland and Meghalaya before finalising the deals.

The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) leads the government in Nagaland and the National People’s Party (NPP) is the majority partner in Meghalaya.

Ram Madhav wrote,”The BJP, NPP, NDPP, AGP and BPF will fight together in Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh with the mission of defeating Congress party in the hustings”

The BJP General Secretary also stated that the party would fight the election together with the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), its coalition partner in Tripura and will contest from Sikkim in partnership with the SKM(Sikkim Krantikari Morcha).

However, no details are available about the number of candidates the BJP will field in the region.

Assam has 14 seats. Its neighbours  Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh has two seats each and Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim have one seat each.
