What can be possibly new, in a Batman film ? Already several films on the character have come out in the past. This burning question was not just in the minds of the character’s fans but also in the minds of the upcoming film’s actor, Colin Farrell. Though, the actor was left surprised after reading Matt Reeves’ script for ‘The Batman’.
Colin stars in the film as Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin. One of the nemesis for Robert Pattinson’s Batman in the film. The actor has watched several Batman films in the past and was curious to know, Reeves’ take on it.
After having reading the script, he says he is amazed with the treatment of the film and called it a completely fresh take on Batman. Talking to UK’s ‘SFX’ magazine he said :
”I have been watching the Batman films with my kids, but this script is something that feels incredibly original. It leans into it but it doesn’t borrow; it’s born of the mythology of that character, Bruce Wayne, Batman and Gotham.”
Further he added, I”feels like a treatment and a version that I hadn’t seen before. Matt Reeves has done an incredible job of keeping it familiar and at the same time unique and new. It’s really exciting to be a part of it.”
Colin’s character of Penguin has been previously played by actor, Danny DeVito in 1992’s ‘Batman Returns’. Being aware about this and having seen the film, Colin elaborated :
”I saw Batman Returns back in the day when it first came out, so of course, I have seen Danny DeVito’s Penguin and loved it. The first Batman with Jack Nicholson, Kim Basinger and Michael Keaton was incredible. And Danny’s Penguin was devious. It was so incredible, I remember it so clearly.”
No conversation about the Batman is complete without mentioning Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy. Colin too talked about it, and said that Nolan’s films brought the character’s contemporary significance back. He said :
”I was obviously a huge fan of what Chris Nolan did with that world. He brought it back to life and gave it a kind of immediacy and contemporary significance. For those reasons it”s really cool to be part of it.”
Apart from Colin, the film will star actors such as Andy Serkis, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano and Jeffery Wright. The film will come out next year in October.
