Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced a major bonanza for Delhites on Thursday months before the national polls. The Aam Aadmi Party-led by Delhi government announced to give free electricity to those consuming 200 units in a month. Addressing a press conference in the national capital, Arvind Kejriwal said that this will come into force with immediate effect.

Kejriwal said the households consuming power up to 200 units will have to give zero charges, while those consuming 201-400 units a month will get approximately 50 percent of the subsidy.

Speaking in the press conference, Delhi Chief Minister explained how the power rates will come down with the new directives. He also compared the rates during his tenure with the previous Congress government led by Sheila Dikshit.

Talking about his move to give free electricity up to 200 units, AAP leader said that decision has been taken keeping in mind the poor consumers. A Refrigerator, a television, 2 fans and a bulb is used in 200 units, he explained.

Further comparing the rates with the decision, Delhi Chief Minister said, ‘A consumer using 200 units in 2013 had to pay 928 Rs, till yesterday he was paying 622 for 200 units, but from now onwards it’s free’. He added that till yesterday those paying 800 for 250 units, now will only have to pay 252.

He further said that the decision will also help in using electricity wisely and people will look to save electricity. He added those using 210 units, will now look forward to saving those extra 10 units to get units so that they can be eligible for free electricity.

AAP leader said that the expense of the electricity subsidy will, however, remain the same, between 1800 to 2000 crore. ‘No Substantial increase is expected with this move’, he told reporters today.

He also praised his government for improving the conditions of the electricity companies in the national capital. He told media that when AAP came to power in Delhi, these companies were bankrupt, but in past 4 and half year we have worked to that level that we are now providing 200 units of free electricity.

Reacting on the move, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia called it a Historic Move. Taking to Twitter, Sisodia said, ‘Historic day for Delhi! CM Arvind Kejriwal declares Free Lifeline Electricity of 200 units to all Every family deserves a life of dignity. Just like good education & healthcare, a basic quantum of electricity to run lights/fans at home is essential for that’.
