The unrest in the hills of West Bengal does not seem to stop even as it enters 19th day. The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha party has been demonstrating protest in the hills demanding for a separate state for the Gorkhas. Though Mamata Banerjee’s government has tried every possible way to suppress the unrest, but have been unsuccessful till now. CRPF regimes are deployed in the region and police are also taking action against the protesters but the GJM are adamant about the demand for Gorkhaland.

The protest reached new heights and became violent after the raids conducted a the residence of GJM leader Bimal Gurung. As a result of the actions taken by the Banerjee government to suppress the unrest, the protesters became all he more violent and had given 12 hours of time to vacate all the boarding schools on 23 June.

To ensure the safety of the children all the schools had declared vacation from 23 June and had sent all the boarders home. The schools were scheduled to open on Monday, 3 July but Principal of St. Joseph’s North Point, Father Shanjumon told that, since the unrest id continuing and GJM has declared indefinite shutdown, the schools have decided to extend the vacation till the time peace is restored in the hills.
