West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee has blamed BJP for spreading rumours and provoking the people to begin riots in the region. Targeting BJP on Wednesday, Banerjee said that the party might be ruling at the Centre and at the state but that does not give it the power to instigate unrest in other regions by spreading rumours.

She also announced the formation of ‘Shanti Vahini’ at the booth levels, to keep a check on people who are misleading the locals and spreading rumours. The team would include area police, students and youth from each locality. The teams would get administrative backing from the government and will be ensuring peace in their respective localities assigned to them.

“They will monitor if anyone is conspiring to spread tension or start a riot in their area. The teams will also check if these people are misleading locals by spreading rumours about robbery or riot in order to polarise them for their own benefits,” she said.

She also referred to the provocative statement made by BJP during a meeting near south Kolkata’s Hazra More. Banerjee further added that the if the region inhabited people of different communities and religion, such statements made by the party could have possibly triggered communal riots in the region.
