Samsung Galaxy Fold

Samsung has postponed the release of the Galaxy Fold in China, amid the screen breaking issues that have been reported by various tech reviewers with their first review unit, said a company official.

The official did not elaborate on the reason for rescheduling.

The Galaxy Fold from Samsung received much to applaud in the United States because of its innovative and bold design, however, the company had to postpone the release of the phone in China following reports of breaks, bulges and blinking screens after using their samples for as little as a day.

Samsung said it received a few reports of damage of the display of $1,980 smartphone, which raised an issue similar to the combustible Galaxy Note 7, which the company had to pull off from the shelves entirely at a massive cost.

The reports surrounding the breaking of the screen on the new Galaxy Fold went viral online and led to the creation of hashtag #foldgate on Twitter.

Samsung released the Galaxy Fold as a stepping stone to the future that according to the company is flexible. This marks the pivotal change in the smartphone space since Apple released its first iPhone in 2007. Samsung’s Chinese rival Huawei has also announced a folding smartphone that the company is calling Mate X.

Samsung noted that it is planning to “thoroughly inspect [the review] units in person,” referring to the devices which suffered a screen break without a direct or obvious cause.

A LIMITED NUMBER OF EARLY GALAXY FOLD SAMPLES WERE PROVIDED TO MEDIA FOR REVIEW. WE HAVE RECEIVED A FEW REPORTS REGARDING THE MAIN DISPLAY ON THE SAMPLES PROVIDED. WE WILL THOROUGHLY INSPECT THESE UNITS IN PERSON TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE MATTER.

SEPARATELY, A FEW REVIEWERS REPORTED HAVING REMOVED THE TOP LAYER OF THE DISPLAY CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE SCREEN. THE MAIN DISPLAY ON THE GALAXY FOLD FEATURES A TOP PROTECTIVE LAYER, WHICH IS PART OF THE DISPLAY STRUCTURE DESIGNED TO PROTECT THE SCREEN FROM UNINTENDED SCRATCHES. REMOVING THE PROTECTIVE LAYER OR ADDING ADHESIVES TO THE MAIN DISPLAY MAY CAUSE DAMAGE. WE WILL ENSURE THIS INFORMATION IS CLEARLY DELIVERED TO OUR CUSTOMERS.

The company has declined to comment whether there would be any change to the U.S release of the Galaxy Fold.

Samsung also plans to begin sales of the Galaxy Fold in European countries and South Korea in May, and Chinese sales from an undisclosed date.
