The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has launched a one of its kind ‘Global Water and Climate Adaptation Centre’ to devise innovative solutions towards problems like water scarcity and climate change.

The initiative for establishment of this centre  was began under the leadership of Professor  S A Sannasiraj from the Department of Ocean Engineering at IIT Madras.

The department’s aim behind launch of this centre is to promote higher education, research study and technological development under the relevant fields of water security and climate adaptation.

Prof. Sannasiraj said that the team of experts at this centre will work to create a strong base for sustainable development. They will develop such adaptive strategies which can help us to cope up with issues related to climate change.

The centre is planned to offer three fundamental activities for the institute. This activities are standard teaching for students, joint PhD Research work by experts and enhanced simulation of transfer activities.

A launch event for this centre was held virtually on 30th June. IIT Madras has collaborated with the Technical University of Dresden and RWTH Aachen University of germany to setup this centre.

According to Professor Dr. Jürgen Stamm, the Dean Faculty for Civil Engineering, IIT Madras will also provide funds with flexible usage for this activities in order to promote them among students.

Dr. Stamm added that the institute is also considering to introduce a Master’s degree programme in Water security and global climate change to attract the participation of international students.

The institute has already conceptualised several plans to spread the knowledge of water security and climate change into various disciplines of indian education system.

A joint global course for M.Sc. in ‘Water Security and climate Change’ is currently being prepared at the institute. Additionally, IIT Madras has recently started a Joint Doctoral Research Programme in the same field.
