Yet again, another mass failure in the mighty Delhi University questions its ‘sanctity’. As per the sources, hundreds of third-year students from various colleges of the varsity have failed their computer practicals. The university has formed a committee to look into complaints for the same.

For several programmes, computer applications is a compulsory subject for students and failing the practicals means the students will have to take a year drop. Most failed students are from BCom (Hons) and BCom courses.

Followed by the protests by the students, supported by different organisations, against the mass failure, DU has formed a committee to look into the same. Against the move, many students came together to protest at the Dean Students’ Welfare (DSW) office on Monday. A senior university official  has conveyed, “The committee has been formed and the members will decide on what action needs to be taken.”

The concerned subject is a part of syllabus of the fifth semester and its marks distribution is 40 for practical, 45 for theory and 15 for internal assessment.

The practical demands for 40 marks alone, wherein 10 are for the workbook, while 30 is given by an external examiner. In order to qualify the practicals so as to pass the subject, one has to score at least 16 marks. This information, however, students allege they weren’t made aware of in their fifth semester.

Afreen Naaz, a third-year student of BR Ambedkar College said, “The examination department did not tell us anything about it. Now we will lose a year.” Apparently the student “failed by just one mark”. She stated the her sum total of marks was above 40.

DU has claimed that any decision over the matter will be announced on July 4.

An Aurobindo College said “I hope the decision is in our favour. Otherwise, we will lose a year. It is not even an Honours subject we have failed.”

In the previous year, the law faculty had witnessed mass failure. Prior to that, a mass failure was observed in Sociology. In the wake of this terrible situation, the varsity has constituted a committee and waived the re-evaluation fee to look into the complaints.
