Iran slams JCPOA Signatories call new nuclear pact

Dubai, July 2: Iran on Tuesday dismissed a United States accusation that it has been long violating the “terms” of the landmark 2015 international nuclear treaty with global powers, after Iran said it had summoned fresh low-enriched uranium than it was allowed under the pact.

On his official Twitter handle, Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, in a message, said, “Seriously?” after receiving a statement from White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham, that stated, “There is little doubt that even before the deal’s existence, Iran was violating its terms.

Iran’s announcement drew a warning from US President Donald Trump that it was “playing with fire”, according to Reuters news reports.

This Iranian move marked the first major action beyond the obligations to the treaty since Washington pulled itself out of the International Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty last year.

However, the Iranian foreign minister said the step was not the violation of the nuclear accord, arguing Tehran was, in fact, exercising its rights to retaliate to America’s withdrawal of the pact.

According to semi-official state-run Fars news agency, the nation’s low-enriched uranium stockpile has passed the 300kg limit permitted under the pact.

The United Nations (UN) nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) – responsible for monitoring Iranian nuclear program under the treaty – has confirmed Tehran had exceeded the uranium-enriching limits.

Asked if he wants to deliver a message to Tehran, Trump said, “No message to Iran. They know what they’re doing. They know what they’re playing with, and I think they’re playing with fire. So, no message to Iran whatsoever.”
