London, May 24: Embattled United Kingdom (UK) prime minister has announced on Friday she will resign on June 6, after the parliament observed that her Brexit deal failed thrice to get passed.

According to ANI news reports, PM Theresa May also stated she will step down as the leaders of the Conservative party too on the same date.

May will step down as Conservative Party leader on 7 June, but not as prime minister. She will carry on governing the country and fulfilling her official duties until a successor is chosen.

“Emotional” May was quoted by CNN as saying, “Ever since I first stepped through the door behind me as prime minister I have striven to make the United Kingdom a country that works not just for the privileged few but for everyone, and to honour the result of the referendum.”

While addressing reporters outside the 10 Downing Street residence of her, the British PM expressed her regret that she couldn’t pass her Brexit agreement in the UK parliament despite reiterated efforts, as well as, negotiations with the opposition Labour Party.

May said, “I have tried three times. I have done my best.”

May’s decision to resign comes amidst uncertainty over Britain’s future in the next few months, whether the UK will leave the European Union (EU) as slated with or without any deal.

May said, “Our politics may be under strain, but there is so much that is good about this country. I am leaving with no ill will.”

May has been long making efforts to push per Brexit agreement or an alternative withdrawal deal through the UK parliament. However, she failed thrice to get her deal through the parliament, which led her to request a Brexit extension to delay the withdrawal process from the bloc.

May has said, “I’ve tried everything possible to find a way through. Today I am making a serious offer to MPs across parliament – a new Brexit deal.”

The Brexit withdrawal date was hence changed to April 12 from March 29. The EU leaders, last month, agreed to extend the Brexit process to an additional six months with October 31 as the fresh date from Britain’s departure from the bloc.
