India’s leading cab aggregator Ola, eyes the United Kingdom’s cab-hailing market after establishing a strong presence in its home country. Ola had entered the Australian market earlier this year and now with its foray into the UK market, it is on track to establish itself as a truly global company.

Softbank-backed Ola has announced that it has obtained licenses to operate in South Wales and Great Manchester. It will be launching operations in South Wales within the next month.

Bhavish Aggarwal, co-founder and CEO, Ola, said, “Ola is excited to announce its plans for the UK, one of the world’s most evolved transportation markets. The UK is a fantastic place to do business and we look forward to providing a responsible, compelling, new service that can help the country meet its ever demanding mobility needs. We look forward to our continued engagement with policymakers and regulators as we expand across the country and build a company embedded in the UK.”

The company claims to be the only ride-hailing app in the UK to provide private hire vehicles (PHVs) and black cabs booking through a single platform. There are also plans to add more transportation options in the future.

With its aggressive expansion plans, the company aims to expand its footprint across the UK by the end of this year.

The company conducts more than 1 billion rides every year across the globe, serving 125 million customers in more than 110 cities with 1 million driver partners.

Ola now has its presence in seven Australian cities with more than 40,000 registered drivers. It has also started making money on every cab ride. The company is aggressively looking to capture the global market as it eyes profitability in a bid to challenge its competitor Uber on a global scale.

While Uber already has a presence in the UK market, there have been reports of London black cab drivers planning to take legal action against Uber as they claim to have lost earnings since Uber’s London operations started in 2012.
