Punjab has been put under high security since the demonstrators from Ravidasia community came out on streets for protesting against the demolition of Ravidas Temple.

Shops, commercial establishments have been shut down across the state. Owing to heavy tensions, schools, colleges, and government offices of some area have also been closed down. Jalandhar and Ludhiana are said to be one of the most affected regions in the state. Protestors have also blocked the National Highway at Phagwara. Due to this, Jalandhar-Delhi National has been disrupted.

Other areas that saw lockouts of commercial business are Patiala, Barnala, Fazilka, Samana, Ferozepur, and Moga. The Ravidasia community has been protesting vehemently against the orders passed by the Supreme Court, which led to the demolition of Ravidas Temple in Tughlaqabad, Delhi.

DDA (Delhi Development Authority) in its statement said that the top court in a case titled ‘Guru Ravi Das Jayanti Samaroh Samiti vs Union of India’ (August 9) iterated that Guru Ravi Das Jayanti Samaroh Samiti has committed a serious breach. The mentioned community has not vacated the forest area as earlier ordered by the court.

Following this, members of the community announced to observe Black Day on August 15 as a mark of protest. Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has urged Prime Minister’s intervention for resolving the matter.

SAD (Shiromani Akali Dal) party has also condemned the Delhi government’s decision. It also said that the party will pursue a legal case on its own expenses.

For addressing their concern to the high command in Delhi, SAD leaders had a meeting with Delhi Lt. Governor Anil Baijal.
