Hours after being unanimously elected as Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla later in the day on Wednesday met President Ram Nath Kovind and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu. Birla walked into Rashtrapati Bhavan to meet President Ram Nath Kovind and later he met Vice President Venkaiah Naidu at his residence.

‘Shri Om Birla, Speaker of Lok Sabha, called on President Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan’, said the President’s office in a tweet. While the office of Vice President of India tweeted, ‘The Speaker of Lok Sabha, Shri Om Birla, called on me in New Delhi today’.

President Ram Nath Kovind is slated to address the joint session of both the houses of parliament today.

Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Kota, Om Birla on Wednesday elected as the Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha unanimously.

His candidature was proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Lok Sabha which was supported by the opposition parties including Congress and Trinamool Congress (TMC). While Jagan Mohan Reddy‘s YSRCP and Naveen Patnaik‘s Biju Janata Dal also backed the proposal for Om Birla’s election for the post of Speaker of 17th Lok Sabha.

Earlier on Tuesday, over 10 political parties including Shiv Sena, National People’s Party, Mizo National Front, Akali DalLok Janshakti PartyJDU, AIADMK, and Apna Dal signed the proposal backing Om Birla for the post of the next Lok Sabha Speaker.

Om Birla is a two time parliamentarian from Kota-Bundi Lok Sabha Seat of Rajasthan. In the recently held national polls, BJP Candidate from Kota Om Birla registered a victory by defeating Ramnarain Meena of Congress with over 2.5 lakh votes.

Birla has replaced Sumitra Mahajan who was the Speaker in the 16th Lok Sabha. Sumitra Mahajan opted out of the Lok Sabha Poll race.
