Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Thursday made a passionate speech in the Karnataka Assembly while moving a confidence motion in the house in a bid to save the Congress-JD(S) coalition government. Speaking in the Karnataka Assembly, HD Kumaraswamy started his speech saying that he has not come just because there is a question on whether he can run a coalition government or not.

He added, ‘Events have shown that even the role of the Speaker has been put under jeopardy by some legislators’.

Slamming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy said, as quoted by ANI, ‘I have self-respect and so do my ministers. I have to make some clarifications. Who is responsible for destabilizing this government?’.

‘Situation has been created in the state so that people lose faith from us’, Chief Minister said while adding that who is responsible for toppling the government. He further asserted that he will prove his majority in the House.

In the meantime, Congress ‘Man In Action’ DK Shivakumar also slammed BJP. Speaking in the House, DK Shivakumar said, ‘Being a former Chief Minister, being the leader of the opposition, BS Yeddyurappa is misguiding the nation, misguiding the court.

While Congress Legislature Party Leader SG Siddaramaiah also spoke in the house. Siddaramaiah asserted that ‘Till we get clarification on Supreme Court’s previous order, it is not appropriate to take a floor test in this session which is against the Constitution’.

Asserting the need to get clarification on SC order, Siddaramaiah said that because of the SC order, rebels would not appear in the House and If we go ahead with the confidence motion, it will be a big loss to the coalition government.

Congress MLA Ramalinga Reddy, one of the rebels, was present in the Karnataka Assembly. Reddy had on Wednesday announced to get back to Congress fold and promised to vote in favour for the coalition government.

While Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA, N Mahesh, stayed away from the Assembly Session. Karnataka Congress MLA Shrimant Patil who was staying with other Congress MLAs at Windflower Prakruthi Resort in Bengaluru, reached Mumbai last night. He is currently admitted to a hospital in Mumbai after he complained of chest pain.

Raising the issue of safety of Congress MLAs, DK Shivakumar stated, ‘There were 8 MLAs who traveled together, here is a picture of one of them (Shrimant Patil) lying inert on a stretcher, where are these people? I’m asking the Speaker to protect our MLAs.’

It should be noted that the Supreme Court ruled yesterday that the 15 rebel MLAs cannot be compelled to take part in the proceedings of the House.

In what can be seen as a breather for Congress-JD(S) Coalition Government of Karnataka, the Supreme Court on Wednesday asserted that the Assembly Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar cannot be forced to take a call within a time frame on the resignation of the rebel MLAs.

The 13-months old coalition government suffered a huge setback earlier this month when 11 MLAs from CongressJD(S) ruling coalition tendered their resignation. And thereafter political episode and drama started in Karnataka. Later on, many other MLAs also tendered their resignation taking the tally to over 15 till now.
