Making a comeback after facing a poll debacle in the last month concluded national polls, the CPI-M led Left Front on Thursday registered resounding victory in the bye-elections conducted recently to 44 local body seats in Kerala. The ruling CPM along with its ally bagged 22 out of the 44 seats where by-polls held.

While Congress-led front, UDF, won 17 seats while BJP could only add 5 to its tally.

The CPI-M led front in the national polls faced a crushing defeat and had won just one of the 20 parliamentary seats of Kerela.

The by-elections were held in 33 village panchayat wards, 6 block panchayat wards, and five municipality wards. The results of the by-election are seen as a comeback for the left front.

In the by-polls, LDF managed to snatch six local body wards from the UDF while it has lost seven others to the UDF. In Pathanamthitta and Kozhikode districts, LFD won all wards that it had sitting members in.

While the Congress-led UFD bags 4 panchayat wards in Thrissur district. It has also gained some grounds in Kottayam and Thiruvananthapuram districts.

While the Saffron party has retained the ward in Palakkad district and also made an in-route in Alappuzha district.

The Left parties always had a better record than the Congress in local body elections in the state. Earlier in 2015, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) had won 549 of the 941 village panchayat wards, 90 of the 152 block panchayat wards, 7 of 14 district panchayats, 44 of 87 municipalities and four of the six corporations in the state.

In the recently held national polls, LDF suffered a huge setback with UDF winning 19 seats out of the 20 Lok Sabha Seats of the state.
