Union Foreign Minister and BJP Rajya Sabha Candidate from Gujarat S Jaishankar on Tuesday said that he is deeply honored to be elected as the member of the Upper House from the ‘Vibrant Gujarat’. Taking to Twitter, Jaishankar said, ‘Deeply honored to be elected to the Rajya Sabha from the vibrant state of Gujarat. Express my gratitude to all those who have placed so much faith in me’.

Speaking in the Presser, S Jaishankar thanked all MLAs for voting for him. He added, ‘Just Like I said during my nomination, Foreign Minister and Gujarat have a natural partnership. Gujaratis can be found in any country, there is no such country where you would not find Gujaratis’.

The elections to fill the two vacancies of the upper house were held on Friday. The two vacancies were created after the election of BJP Chief Amit Shah and Smriti Irani to the 17th Lok Sabha.

However, the Poll Office has yet not declared the results of the Rajya Sabha By-polls but Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has already claimed their victory based on the numbers he has in the Gujarat Assembly.

Congratulations Shri S Jaishankar and Jugal Lokhandwala ji for becoming a member of Rajya Sabha from Gujarat, Chief Minister said in subsequent tweets.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State Chief Jitu Vaghani also claimed party victory and said parties part of Congress-led UPA also voted for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Nomination.

Elections to fill vacant seats of Rajya Sabha saw a dramatic turn of events on Friday. Two Congress rebel MLAs – Alpesh Thakor and Dhavalsinh Zala – went against the party line and voted for BJP Nominees. Both tendered their resignation from the house after casting their vote.

Following which, Gujarat Congress filed a complaint with the Assembly Speaker Rajendra Trivedi seeking disqualification of its rebel MLAs Alpesh Thakor and Dhavalsinh Zala.

‘The Representation of People’s Act clearly said that the lawmakers have to for their own party. However, both the MLAs – Zala and Thakor – voted to BJP. ‘Our Observer has filed a complaint seeking to cancel their votes and envoke Anti-Defection Law’, he added’, said Congress Leader Jaysinh Parmar.
