Senior Congressman and Legislative Party Leader Balasaheb Thorat is likely to be appointed as the new state Chief of the Maharashtra unit replacing incumbent and party’s stalwart Ashok Chavan. Chavan had earlier resigned from the State Top Post after the party put a flop show in the national elections.

Former CM Ashok Chavan himself had lost the polls from home turf Nanded.

This is slated to come at a time when the state is inching towards the crucial assembly elections, scheduled for October-November later this year.

Last month, Balasaheb Thorat was appointed as Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader of Maharashtra assembly. He, had in the past, represented Agriculture and Revenue portfolios during the UPA-led government.

Thorat, who was elected as an MLA from Sangamner in Ahmednagar district in 2009, is credited for his contribution in the milk cooperative movement.

A State functionary who was familiar with the development claimed that party may also appoint three working President under Thorat. All these three working presidents will be from three communities, he later claimed.

However, there is no official announcement about the same but it is expected that Balasaheb Thorat will soon get a new role in the State, once a stronghold of the party.

The development came amid reports about many senior Congress Leaders were upset with Chavan. A group of leaders has blamed Former CM for ticket distribution and the strategies adopted by him to take on BJP-Shiv Sena in the state.

Congress in the state is making efforts to revive itself after facing a humiliating defeat in the recently held national polls. In the state that sends 48 MPs to the Lok Sabha Polls, NCP-Congress could only bag 5 Lok Sabha Seats with NCP winning 4 seats while one seat won by the Indian National Congress.

Shiv Sena-BJP combine swept the state in the national polls bagging 41 seats out the 48 seats. Bharatiya Janata Party won 23 seats out of 25 contested while its partner Shiv Sena registered a victory on 18 out of 23 contested.

Eyeing to make a comeback in the state, Congress is also making efforts to reach out to small allies like Prashant Ambedkar‘s Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi.
