Apna Dal (Sonelal) on Tuesday picked its MP and former Minister Anupriya Patel as its new National Chief months after the poll outcome. The announcement was made on Tuesday by his husband and Apna Dal (S) outgoing Chief Ashish Patel.

Speaking on the occasion of the birth anniversary of founder Sonelal Patel, MLC Ashish Patel moved the proposal for appointing Anupriya Patel as the new Chief. The proposal was seconded by all other members who were present on the occasion. Till now, the former Union Minister was the guardian of the party.

Ashish Patel added that a national convention will be called later to get final approval of all members for Anupriya Patel’s appointment.

The party, on the occasion of its founder’s Birth Anniversary, organized a mega event in Lucknow.

‘Paid homage to the Messiah of the backward and downtrodden. Launching the ‘Mass Self-Respect Day’ on the occasion of Birth Anniversary of Dr. Sonelal Patel by lighting the lamp, who fought for life to bring justice to the pioneers, the workers, the backward, the downtrodden and the laborers of social justice’, said Anupriya Patel in a tweet.

Anupriya Patel, who was a Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare of India in Narendra Modi‘s previous government’ has not been inducted in the Cabinet this time.

Apna Dal (S) contested the national polls in partner with Bharatiya Janata Party in Uttar Pradesh. As per the poll pact, Apna Dal has been offered two Lok Sabha Seats – Mirzapur and Roberstganj. The party won both seats with Anupriya Patel emerging victorious from Mirzapur Lok Sabha Seat.

In Uttar Pradesh, Bharatiya Janata Party bagged 62 seats and with its ally Apna Dal (Sonelal) it took its tally to 64 seats out of the 80 Lok Sabha Seat. While Mahagathbandhan bagged 15 seats – BSP 10 and SP 5 – while Congress only managed to retain its bastion Rae Bareli.
