Natarajan Chandrasekaran Tata Sons Chairman

Natarajan Chandrasekaran, 53 year old managing director and CEO of Tata Consultancy Services, has been announced as the Chairman of Tata Sons, a post vacant after the sacking of Cyrus Mistry (Ratan Tata acted as the Interim Chairman in the meantime). He will take charge on February 21st. The development comes less than 3 months after the controversial sacking of Cyrus Mistry, which further turned the relations between him and Ratan Tata bitter.

The board of Tata Sons met on Thursday evening to decide the next chairman and as speculated by a few even before the meet, N Chandrasekaran emerged as the front runner for the post. The meeting to announce the new Tata Sons Chairman was unscheduled till 4 PM today and it happened much before the scheduled February 24 date. To select the new Chairman, Tata Sons had made a 5 member committee which included Ratan Tata himself and 3 other board members of Tata Sons.

N Chandrasekaran, a computer science master graduate, joined Tata Group in 1987 and has proved himself at times to rise through the ranks. He has been MD and CEO of TCS since 2009 and was considered front-runner from day one. He also happens to be on board of Tata Sons since October 2016.

After this announcement, Ratan Tata is likely to go back to his previous role of Chairman Emeritus. However, some individuals in the Tata Group want him to be a senior advisor for at least next couple of years. However, nothing about Ratan Tata’s role could be independently verified.
