The meeting of the  High powered panel comprising PM Modi, CJI Gogoi, and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday to appoint new CBI Director remained ‘Inconclusive’, sources familiar with the development said after the end of the meeting. The panel, however, is expected to meet again to finalize name of the new CBI Chief.

The panel had on January 10 removed Alok Verma from the top CBI Post.

Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said the panel was presented with a list of 70 to 80 names without any details of what all they had worked upon. “Both the Chief Justice and I said we need more information about who served in what position, competence etc. Both of us requested that next meet be called at the earliest,” Kharge said reportedly.

Sources in the Prime Minister office said, that those who are the frontrunners for the post includes –  1983 batch officer Shivanand Jha, who is serving as DGP Gujarat, BSF Director General Rajnikant Mishra, CISF Director General Rajesh Ranjan, Director General NIA YC Modi and Mumbai Police Commissioner Subodh Jaiswal.

Sources further added, Director General NIA YC Modi – a part of SIT investigation Gujarat riots- is another strong contender for the post.

Earlier, the high powered Committee that met on January 10 had sacked Alok Verma from CBI Top PostCongress Leader Mallikarjun Kharge representing the opposition was the only member in the three-member high powered committee that voted in dissent against the removal of Alok Verma as the CBI Director. However, With 2:1 Majority the High-level panel fired the Verma from the top post. Other Members of the committee were – Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Justice nominated Justice Sikri.

Congress Leader had also written to Prime Minister asking him to appoint regular CBI Director. He has also asked Prime Minister Modi to make public all the Key Documents – CVC report, minutes of the meeting that ousted Alok Verma.

Earlier on January 8, Supreme Court reinstated CBI Chief Alok Verma setting aside CVC order dated October 23rd, 2017. Justice Kishan Kaul who pronounced the verdict on behalf of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said that the select committee will be called within seven days from Tuesday to take a decision on the basis of the findings of the CVC inquiry into the corruption allegations against the CBI director. After Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Sikri recuses from hearing a plea challenging the appointment of CBI interim chief Rao

In another Development, CJI Gogoi recused himself from hearing a plea challenging M Nageswara Rao’s appointment as interim Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and has sought transparency in the process of short-listing, selection and appointment of the CBI Director,
