Just a day after assuming office, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced stay on construction of metro car shed project in the Aarey Colony, which is considered the green lungs of commercial capital.

Massive protests were held last month in Aarey Colony, where celebrities also participated against cutting of trees for the construction work. Addressing the media, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said that not a single tree leaf will be cut till further developments.

Uddhav’s son Aditya, who is an MLA from the Worli, said, “All the people of Mumbai are happy with this decision. Development works will continue but the harm that was being done to the environment will be stopped.”
Earlier, a Supreme Court bench had sought a status report with pictures on plantation, transplantation and cutting of trees in the Aarey colony.
