Alleging a contradiction over the NRC statement, Congress leaders said that the recent speech of Prime Minister Narendra Modi runs opposite to what was claimed by Home Minister Amit Shah.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Congress leader Pramod Tiwari said that Amit Shah had stated in parliament that NRC would be implemented while PM Modi had stated that there is no talk of its implementation. In Sunday’s speech at Ramlila Maidan, Narendra Modi had said, Modi said, “I want to tell the 130 crore people of India that ever since my government came to power in 2014… from then until now… there has been no discussion on NRC anywhere… we only had to implement it in Assam to follow Supreme Court directives.”

Speaking further, Pramod Tiwari questioned the mismatch between the two leader’s statements. Congress leader PL Punia too alleged the contradiction between the statements of Modi and Shah. As quoted by ANI, PL Punia said, “If there is no connection between NRC and NPR, why Amit Shah referred to NRC in the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha debate.”

On the other hand, Congress leader Ajay Maken raised his objections to the linking of CAA and NRC. He said that though the UPA-led NPR was implemented during the UPA government it never took it forward to NRC”. But according to the annual report of the home ministry for the year 2018-2019, the BJP government is planning to make NPR as the first step towards the creation of the National Register of Citizens.

The nation is already reeling under political turmoil over the issue of the Citizenship Act and NRC.
