Spotify has said that it has gained more than 1 million unique users from India across its premium and free tiers since the launch of the app a week ago.

Spotify was launched in India on Tuesday as the popular music streaming app in the already crowded segment of online music streaming. The app was launched as a direct competition to Reliance Industries Jio Saavn and Apple Music. The Swedish company is offering free service that will run with ads, along with a premium version of the app that requires ₹119 per month.

India, with a population of 1.3 billion more than 400 million of which are smartphone users, could turn out to be a potentially huge market for Spotify. Currently, the Tencent-baked Gaana is leading the Indian streaming market with over 80 million monthly users. Spotify has more than 200 million monthly users and 96 million subscribers.

In India, the streaming service app is competing with other players including Amazon’s Prime Music, Alphabet Inc’s Google Play Music, and Xiaomi-backed Hungama.

While Spotify is offering ₹119 monthly plan for its premium plan in India, it also has other options for users who choose not to sign up for the monthly plan. Spotify’s monthly plans require a credit card for payment. The first 30 days of this plan are free as trial purposes.

Spotify is also offering premium top-up options where the company charges ₹13 for a day of subscription, ₹39 for seven days, and ₹129 for a month, ₹389 for three months, and ₹719 for six months. The most expensive top-up option is for ₹1,189 for a year. Spotify is letting users pay with Paytm and UPI along with the traditional debit or credit card as well for some of these plans.

To put things into contrast, Apple Music costs ₹120 per month in India, while Google Play Music costs ₹99 per month. JioSaavn Pro has 90 days free for Jio network users, and then they are offering a monthly plan option of ₹99. Gaana Plus costs ₹99 per month and the company is also offering a year subscription for a discounted price of ₹499.
