Tamil Nadu has banned online gambling in the state.

Governor of Tamil Nadu, Mr. Banwarilal Purohit, promulgated an ordinance banning online gambling sites in the state.

The law which has come into force prescribes a fine of Rs. 5,000 and a 6 month jail term for a person violating the law.

The ordinance which bans the persons who are wagering or betting in cyberspace using computers or any communication device or resource, also prescribes a fine of Rs. 10,000 and imprisonment upto 2 years for a person who opens or operates online gambling house.

Further, electronic transfers of funds used for wagering or betting, distribution of the winnings, the prize money have also been banned, reported DNA India.

Notably, the move to specifically ban online gambling in Tamil Nadu comes after the govt. submitted its response to High Court of Madras that the state has decided to ban online gambling and that it would pass a law regarding this very soon.
