Samsung Galaxy Fold

Samsung is working on a new smartphone that looks like Huawei Mate X, according to a patent filed by the company. Spotted by LetsGoDigital, the patent was filed with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) on September 21, 2018, and published on January 24. The patent reveals a clamshell design where a tablet-like device folds to form a smartphone form factor with screens on both sides.

The patent also suggested that the device will be compact in size and there will be an integration of a hinge in the middle of the device to allow it to fold, as seen on Huawei Mate X. Notably, the Samsung Galaxy Fold comes with a book-like folding mechanism which turns the smartphone into a tablet.

Samsung Patent

It remains to be seen if Samsung will actually go with the design filed on the patent with its next generation of Galaxy Fold. The designs featured in the patent filing don’t always make it to a full-fledged device. However, there is already speculation that Samsung could be working on multiple foldable phones.

Recently, Bloomberg reported that Samsung is working on two new foldable devices, one of which folds outwards, identical to the Huawei Mate X. The other device might have a clamshell design with a smaller external display, similar to the upcoming Motorola Razr.

Samsung has been one of the first OEMs to release its foldable smartphone and acknowledge the potential in foldable devices. Just last month, the South Korean major launched the $1980 Galaxy Fold. The company plans to sell the Galaxy Fold in the US and South Korea from April 26.

In terms of specifications, the company revealed that the Samsung Fold is powered by a 7nm processor, the name of which was not disclosed. It is likely that Samsung will go with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC for its foldable phone. The 7.3-inch Infinity Flex Dynamic AMOLED panel boasts of a resolution of  1536×2152 pixels (4.2:3), whereas the smaller 4.6-inch Super AMOLED panel includes 840×1960 pixels resolution (21:9). The smartphone also features 12GB of RAM and 512GB of onboard storage which is not expandable. Samsung has included two batteries that are placed on the side of the phone combining a total capacity of 4,380mAh.
