Google has posted a teaser saying “something big is coming to the Pixel universe” on May 8th. This could mean that users do not have to wait any longer for more news on Pixel devices. The company has also included a video promo showcasing Avengers: Endgame-themed AR stickers, however, the teaser hints that Google has more in stores. The timing of the announcement coincides with the rumors about Google releasing essentially watered down versions of Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, and it could be expected that the company would launch Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL on May 8th.
Recently, Google itself confirmed the existence of Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL by temporarily listing the devices on its store. And May 8 conveniently accords with Google’s I/O Developer conference that is slated to kick off 7th May. Past reports suggested that Google will be debuting the smartphones in mid-year, and even Google’s Hiroshi Lockheimer admitted that he was using a pre-release (but unnamed) phone in March.
There have been various reports about the specifications of the device, and according to Google Play Developer console listing, the Pixel 3a, which is codenamed ‘Bonito’, will come with a 5.6-inch full-HD+ display. It will be backed up by a 3,000mAh battery with 18w fast charging support. In terms of camera, it will feature a single 12-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front selfie shooter. Both the devices will run Android 9.0 Pie out-of-the-box and will be treated to Android Q update as soon as it is official.
The Google Pixel 3a XL, on the other hand, has been rumored to come with a 6-inch screen and a comparable performance, although Snapdragon 710 has been teased.
The Pixel 3a will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 SoC, while the bigger Pixel 3a XL will feature Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC. Both the device will be coming in with 4GB of RAM and will sport 18:9 aspect ratio.
Google I/O 2019 is scheduled to take place at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California (USA), and now Google has posted the initial schedule for the conference.
Expectedly, Google will be kicking off its I/O event with the main Google keynote at 10 AM PDT, which will likely be hosted by key Google executives, including Sundar Pichai. As it goes every year, Google will be listing the changes that have been or are expected to be introduced to its services and products, including Android and its upcoming variant, Android Q. The event will be live streamed for enthusiasts who are interested in the conference but have not been able to score a ticket.
