HRD defers decision on hiking MTech tuition fee at IITs

Amidst JNU protests against hostel fee hike, the Union Minister of Human Resource Development Ramesh Pokhriyal “Nishank’ announced on Tuesday that they are not going to increase the M.Tech program tuition fees at Indian Institute of Management (IITs).

This comes as a surprise as the Ministry of Human Resource Management (MHRD) released a press release on September 27 in which it had approved the increment in the M.tech tuition fees but delayed it, keeping in mind the ongoing JNU protests in the country.

As per the press release, the tuition fees of M.tech students will be the same as B.tech students from ₹30,000 annually to ₹2,00,000. The ministry has also suspended the adoption of the tenure track system.

There are 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in the country with IIT Madras being the best for Undergraduate and Postgraduate science courses.

Meanwhile, On Monday, the HRD Minister informed the Parliament about 344 private universities are functioning in the country out of which 71 have been examined by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in the last three years.
